I could have made them memorize them, but research shows that's a good way to help them forget the words on Saturday. So we made root trees in class (check out When Kids Can't Read by Kylene Beers) and posted our results to the wiki. Students had to come up with more examples on their own. Their results weren't always correct, but it got them thinking about language.

    320 pages
    710L
    Annotation:
Topics: comic books, bullying, confidence, relationships, school violence, school shootings.
Thematic statement: If you want something, you have to push through anything that gets in your way.
Range of appeal: Grades 8 through 10. Better suited for boys than girls. Reminds me of Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian.
Plot: Fanboy knows he's the most unpopular kid at school and is frequently bullied. One night, he gets an instant message from someone he doesn't know: "why do you let him hit you?" This is how he meets Kyra, another student just as fed up with the high school class culture as Fanboy is. The two become friends despite the fact that Fanboy is a careful geek and Kyra is a reckless goth. What Fanboy does haveing going for him is the graphic novel he's been working on, already 100 pages long, and he plans to show it to his idol, Brian Michael Bendis at the comic book convention coming later that month. Kyra convinces Fanboy to show it to her and takes up the cause of helping Fanboy get it published. Fanboy does get to meet Bendis, but he doesn't have time to review the work, prompting an embarrassing outburst from Kyra. Fanboy is crushed, so his friend Cal takes him to a high school party - Fanboy's first - where it turns out he's not as shunned as he thought, makes out with a senior, and returns to school ready to stand up for himself no matter who gets in the way.
Evaluation/ Mini-rationale: Shows the type of bullying that happens in schools and how it can be overcome.

Everything below the line is an example of what not to do!
So I first posted most of this stuff when I was a student teacher. It was not a good year by any means. Use any of the information below at your own risk.
If you want to see some better stuff of where I am now, take a look at this, or wait a few years and maybe I'll get around to posting it here.

    Book Clubs
Book clubs, also called literature cirlces, are groups of students who keep a reading schedule and meet in class to discuss the book they are all reading togeter. It is considered a practice that promotes life-long readers because the practice of book clubs is one that adults participate in voluntarily, although perhaps with less structure than in the classroom setting.
